According to last owner, this car had a 2012 paint and frame on restoration.
It has changed hands twice since then, once to buyer in Ohio, who had the car for a few years, then to me.
Overall:
This car is a real head turner.
It sounds killer and you can't pass another car without the obligatory thumbs up.
The color is striking with just enough sparkle to make it really special.
At local shows and meet ups it's always a favorite.
This car is perfect for someone who wants to get in and drive it.
You can keep it exactly the way it is and have a fantastic head-turning beauty.
Or, the next level is not far off with this car.
You'll get a real, 242 coded GTO, without paying the crazy money for matching numbers.
Engine:
1968 400 block, 1968 heads, Quadrajet Stage 1, 1 Jet Performance Carb Spacer, Edelbrock Performer Intake, Ram Air Manifolds, Flowmaster 2.
5 w/ Super 40's.
The number on drivers side of distributor is K157 - I dated this to November 15, 1967.
The block number is 9790071, YC - which would be 1968 or 69.
Cylinder head has date stamp K217 - I dated this to November 21, 1967.
Based on the engine stamps, the block was originally a 1968 290HP, 2bbl, out of a full size Pontiac.
The engine runs great.
No problems starting and no problems running.
Engine temp runs nice and cool.
I run 10/30 Mobile 1 synthetic and only premium gas.
Things I've changed since 2018, mostly in 2018-19:
New hi output ram air ceramic coated manifolds to Flowaster 2.
5.
Flowmaster Super 40's (make a killer sound on this car).
Jet Performance Quadrajet Stage 1 carb.
This replaced a Holley that was an overflowing bog mess.
The QJ runs flawlessly.
All I had to do was a little tinkering with fuel/air mix and idle and it runs great with the QJ.
Also replaced the fuel line and filter with the new QJ and added the spacer.
New Starter in 2019.
New Wiper Motor.
Added Summit gauge cluster.
Replaced rear bumper with correct chrome bumper.
Both rear view mirrors.
Seat head rest covers were replaced.
Rear window defogger was installed.
Headlights replaced.
History:
This is a real 242 GTO.
The VIN number is visible in the pics.
Aside from previously noted, a PHS doc will be sent, along with images from previous owner.
PHS docs show this car was originally red with a black vinyl top.
Paint is now Stratospere Mica Blue and all paint codes will be provided with sale.
How it drives:
Acceleration is awesome.
It's a TH-300 so you'll only have 3 gears but there is a Hurst His-n-her Shifter.
From a standstill both rear wheels will light up nicely.
The car has some gear in it - at 55 mph you'll run about 2600rpm.
Braking is good - pedal has no smoosh and is very responsive.
Handling is as you would expect from a big 1968.
The steering wheel column was replaced by previous owner; steering is typical.
Items that could use attention:
The speedometer ticks and bounces at slow speed, under about 25mph, then it smooths out.
Dash pad above the glove compartment is just a hair in the way and to pop open the glove box you need to press on it.
Turn signals do not auto-turn off (I don't think this is broken, I think it is how the steering wheel was installed).
After market radio recently failed (may just be a connection - will update listing if corrected).
Paint chip in front passenger side bumper (see pics).
Driver side door needs a new hinge pin.
Door opens and closes just fine, but the roller pin doesn't hold the door in an open position.
